Tapping Into Communication & Social Cues Beyond the Classroom

Communication, especially in new social situations, can be difficult. Tools like iPads and apps are helpful,  but figuring out how to tap into these tools and use them in your daily life can be challenging.

We can help you bridge that gap with our Family Communication Empowerment Program, focusing on building communication skills and navigation different social situations.

Gain Confidence in Your Communication Skills

Our communication coaching program for individuals with disabilities is designed to help you navigate the journey between school, community resources, home, work and more.

We’ll work with you, your family, and other members of your support system to understand the unique challenges you face and provide personalized strategies to enhance communication and social thinking skills, building your independence and quality of life.

Our program is designed with your needs in mind, offering a range of key features to support your communication skills, social thinking, and overall development. Through collaboration, visual enhancements, and customized strategies, we can help you address issues related to communication breakdowns.

Communication Coaching that Meets Your Unique Needs

Working closely with our team of experts and disability consultants, you’ll participate in a 12-week program focused on social cognition, social thinking, and communication tools. We start with an individualized assessment and meeting to get to know you and your needs, then move into training.

Week 1
Directly model and teach effective communication, social thinking, and social cognition skills on a personal level in your home.

Week 2
Reflect and regroup on how the tactics are working and what’s needed for additional understanding.

We’ll repeat this cycle for 12 weeks to ensure continuous support and improvement based on the feedback you provided. Then you can decide whether to continue, take a break for continued practice, or venture off on your own.

How We Support You

Our program will help strengthen your social cognition and thinking skills, enabling you to express your needs, wants, and ideas more clearly and better understand what’s happening around you. Improved communication can lead to better relationships at home, more effective collaboration at school or work, and greater independence in your daily life.

Transitioning between different places, events, and social situations can be hard to navigate. Our program is designed to bridge these gaps, providing you with consistent support and strategies that apply across different settings. This continuity and training helps you adapt more easily and thrive in each environment.

With visual enhancements and personalized social thinking and communication strategies, we aim to make your day-to-day life more intuitive and navigable, whether you live alone or with loved ones. These visuals can help you complete tasks more independently and allow others to better support you, boosting your confidence and reducing reliance on others.

Our program connects resources and social tactics used across schools, community organizations, and other support networks. We help you navigate each space and better utilize your resources, ensuring you have access to all the tools and support you need.

Our team provides continuous guidance and feedback to help you progress towards your goals. We monitor your development, adjust strategies as needed, and celebrate your successes with you.

What We’ll Focus On

Communication is the cornerstone of independence. We’ll focus on understanding and utilizing facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, and even digital communication (like text messages). These social communication and awareness skills help you better engage and navigate the world around you and pick up on social cues you may otherwise miss.

Our program focuses on enhancing perspective-taking and understanding idiomatic expressions and context so you can better understand the nuances of language and communication. For example, when someone says, “It’s raining cats and dogs,” you’ll learn to interpret this as heavy rain rather than taking it literally. There’s all sorts of these types of phrases, so we want to help you minimize social confusion.

We’ll use role playing and video modeling to work through social situations and spaces that cause anxiety. We utilize technology and tactics you already know and use daily, enhancing your ability to express yourself effectively in different situations and environments.

Visual aids can be powerful tools for improving organization, understanding, and independence. Our experts will help you integrate visual supports throughout your home. This can include labeled areas, visual schedules, or step-by-step guides for daily tasks. These enhancements are tailored to your specific needs, making your home environment more accessible and user-friendly.

Every individual is unique, and so are your communication needs. We create personalized communication plans that align with your strengths and preferences and work with your support system to implement. Whether you need strategies for clearer communication at home or school, or more effective ways to connect with your community, we are here to develop a plan that works for you.
