Foundations in Caregiving

Supporting a loved one with diverse abilities can be deeply meaningful, but it can also bring moments of uncertainty, overwhelm, and questions about where to begin.

Building Awareness, Life Balance, and Sustainable Support

The Foundations in Caregiving course was created to provide caregivers with a supportive starting point for understanding the many pieces involved in caregiving while also recognizing the importance of caring for themselves.

Rather than introducing large amounts of information all at once, this course focuses on building understanding one nugget at a time, allowing caregivers to develop awareness, confidence, and practical tools they can apply in everyday life.

This on-demand course unfolds over six months, giving caregivers time to reflect, learn, and implement new ideas at a pace that works for them.

Beginning with Awareness and Life Balance

At Focus on Freedom, meaningful change begins with awareness.

Caregivers often carry many responsibilities across home, school, services, and daily life. When these responsibilities build up without space to reflect, it can easily lead to overwhelm.

The Foundations in Caregiving course begins by helping caregivers build awareness around their own experiences, priorities, and life balance.

Through reflection and discussion, caregivers begin to notice:

By beginning with awareness, caregivers are able to build strategies that feel sustainable rather than overwhelming.

Learning One Nugget at a Time

Caregivers often receive information from many different professionals across school, therapy, and service settings.

While these recommendations are often well-intended, they can sometimes leave caregivers wondering:

Where do we begin?

When too much information is introduced at once, it can feel easier to pause or shut down rather than move forward.

The Foundations in Caregiving course was designed to break learning into small, manageable pieces. Each month focuses on a single topic, allowing caregivers to learn, reflect, and implement one strategy at a time.

This approach helps caregivers build systems that grow gradually and sustainably, rather than trying to change everything at once.

How the Course Works

The Foundations in Caregiving course is designed as a six-month learning experience, with one topic explored each month.

Each month includes three short lessons supported by videos and reflection tools.

Week 1 –
Understanding the Topic

Caregivers are introduced to the topic and begin learning foundational information and concepts.

Week 2 –
Exploring Strategies

This lesson walks through examples and strategies that may support caregivers and their loved one within everyday routines.

Week 3 –
Building a Personal Plan

Caregivers choose one strategy or “nugget” that feels most meaningful to them and develop a plan for how they would like to implement it.

Week 4 –
Implementation

The final week focuses on putting that plan into practice and observing how it works within daily life.

This structure follows the learning philosophy of “I do, we do, you do,” helping caregivers move from understanding a concept to applying it in ways that work within their own home.

Course Topics

Each month focuses on a key area that supports both caregivers and the individuals they support.

Supporting Unpaid Caregivers

The Foundations in Caregiving course supports parents and caregivers by strengthening their understanding of caregiving and the many factors that influence daily life.

Through this course, caregivers gain:

By building knowledge and awareness, caregivers are better equipped to support their loved one while also recognizing the importance of caring for themselves within the caregiving journey.

Learn at Your Own Pace

Because caregiving schedules are often busy and unpredictable, this course is offered as an on-demand learning experience.

Caregivers can move through the course at a pace that works for them, allowing space to reflect and apply ideas gradually.

This approach aligns with the Focus on Freedom philosophy of building meaningful change one step at a time.
